The 458th Engineer Battalion (C)(W) was activated at Camp Swift, Texas on 30 December 1943 as the 1252nd Engineer Combat Battalion.

It served in the European Theater of Operations, taking part in the Rhine land, Ardennes Alsace and central Europe campaigns in 1944-1945. Because of these campaigns, three battle streamers are authorized for the Battalion Colors. The 1252nd Engineer Battalion was returned to Camp Polk, Louisiana and inactivated on 10 December 1945. On 17 December 1946, the Battalion was reactivated in the ORC and assigned to the Wilmington, Delaware area. On 16 June 1948 it was reassigned as the 458th Engineer Battalion (Combat)(Army). On 1 March 1959, the Reserve Center in Wilmington Delaware, First United States Army, was deactivated and reassigned to the Second United States Army Area at the U. S. Army Reserve center in Johnstown Pennsylvania. At this point, the 458th Engineer Battalion (C)(A) took control over the troop list formerly occupied by the 427th Engineer Battalion (Construction). This combined with the fact that 95% of the Battalion strength came from the unit gave the 458th Engineer Battalion (C)(C) the unofficial lineage of the 427th Engineer Battalion (C)(C). In the mid 1970ıs, the 458th Engineer Battalion (Combat)(Army) was redesignated as the 458th Engineer as the 458th Engineer Battalion (Combat)(Construction).

In 1978, 1982 and 1985, subordinate units of the 458th Engineer Battalion (C)(C) were awarded the Emerson C. Itschner Award for Engineer Excellence by the Society of Military Engineer and the U. S. Army Forces Command. The 458th Engineer Battalion (C)(W) unit crest is a white (DıArgent) Shield with red art and surcharged with a Red Rampart Lion that represents the Ardennes region of Belgium, where the 458th Engineer Battalion first entered combat. The Black Executionerıs Axe stands for the Battalions service in Germany.
